Sarcoma patients span a range of people from millionaires to the homeless. They all, however, have one fact in common: they have acquired one of the most aggressive cancers known to man. As a result, the treatments used in this battle are unusually lengthy and/or costly resulting in significant financial hardships for the patients and their families. Mortgages are unmet, rent is left unpaid, prostheses are purchased on credit, and patients unable to raise enough money miss out on opportunities to enroll in potentially life-saving experimental trials. With Sarcoma Warriors of the Upstate (SWU), these battles can go away. Our organization was created to join the fight against cancer on the side of today’s patient. The sole purpose of our organization is a simple one: make the fight against cancer fair.

The name warrior was not randomly chosen. The common descriptor “cancer survivor” evokes thoughts of a certain level of passivity that none of our patients exhibit. From the time the diagnosis is given, our patients fight. They fight like warriors! The long-term goal of SWU is to help as many warriors as possible win their daily battle with costs of prostheses for their amputated extremities, win their monthly battles with mortgages or rent, win their yearly battles with medical bills and expenses, and ultimately win their lifelong battle with sarcomas.
